Introduction:
Soil compactness is also called soil hardness or soil firmness or soil penet-ration resistance. It is generally expressed as the resistance (in Pa) of a metal plunger or probe when it is pressed into the soil. Soil firmness is the ability of the soil to resist compaction and breakage by external forces and is one of the aspects of soil properties. In addition, soil physical properties include soil texture, structure, porosity, etc. It involves the firmness, plasticity, permeability, drainage, water storage capacity, and ease of root penet-ration.
Soil firmness consists of soil shear force, compression force and friction force. It is a synthetic indicator of the strength of the soil. When a metal plunger or probe is pressed into the soil, it is divided into two methods: dynamic load and static load, and the measured values differ from method to method, but there is a connection. The shape of the plunger has a cone, flat head, round ball and wedge, etc. These also have an effect on the measured value. The measured values for the same method are mainly determined by the soil texture, weight capacity and water content. Of these, water content has the greatest influence.
Soil compaction predicts soil bearing capacity, tillage and resistance to root extension. Soil firmness is an important indicator of soil physical properties and is used to evaluate soil tillage. Firm soils can prevent water infiltration, reduce fertilizer utilization, affect plant root growth, and lead to crop yield reduction.
